White Sox Dominate Tigers with Three Home Runs, Extend Winning Streak to Four
The Chicago White Sox showcased their offensive strength in the absence of Munetaka Murakami, defeating the Detroit Tigers 7-1 on Saturday at Rate Field. Murakami, who is sidelined due to a right hamstring strain, is expected to be out for four to six weeks. Despite this setback, the team leaned on contributions from Edgar Quero and Colson Montgomery, who each hit solo home runs, while Andrew Benintendi added a two-run shot, securing their fourth consecutive victory.
The game drew an enthusiastic crowd of 29,435 fans, who witnessed the White Sox score late in the contest. With this win, the Sox improved their record to 31-27, marking the first time this season they have been four games above .500. Manager Will Venable praised his players for maintaining high energy levels, stating, “When these guys create a culture where they bring a ton of energy, you hope that can sustain when you miss somebody and you have that built up.”
The White Sox capitalized on a shaky start from Tigers pitcher Framber Valdez, who allowed a double to Chase Meidroth in the first inning and subsequently issued two walks, loading the bases. Valdez's wild pitch allowed Meidroth to score, giving the Sox an early advantage. Quero later added another run with a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 2-0.
The Tigers managed to cut the deficit to 2-1 with a home run by Wenceel Pérez in the third inning, but White Sox starter Anthony Kay held strong, allowing only that single run over five-plus innings while striking out three batters. Key defensive plays, including a critical strikeout from reliever Grant Taylor, helped maintain the lead as the Tigers threatened in the later innings.
The Sox added to their score with two more runs in the seventh, including Quero's second home run of the season and a single from Rikuu Nishida that brought in Benintendi. In the eighth, Montgomery hit his 14th home run before Benintendi closed out the scoring with a two-run blast. “The team is playing pretty good baseball,” Quero noted. “Playing hard every day and that’s the mentality right now.”
In a corresponding move, the White Sox called up Jacob Gonzalez, their 2023 first-round draft pick, from Triple-A Charlotte. Although he did not play, Gonzalez expressed his excitement about being part of the team, especially on his 24th birthday. He has been impressive in the minors, boasting a .317 batting average with 19 home runs. “I’ll play anywhere,” Gonzalez said, highlighting his readiness to contribute wherever needed.
