Wyndham Clark Seeks Redemption at US Open as Rory McIlroy’s Challenge Stalls
Wyndham Clark is making headlines at this year's US Open, currently leading the pack after a solid second-round performance that brought him to seven-under par. The 32-year-old from Denver, who won the prestigious tournament in 2023, is four strokes ahead of fellow Americans Sam Stevens and Xander Schauffele, along with England's Matt Fitzpatrick.
This year's competition marks a significant change for Clark compared to his tumultuous experience at last year’s event, where he was infamously banned from Oakmont Country Club after an incident involving a damaged locker. In a moment of frustration over missing the cut, Clark took out his anger on a century-old locker, prompting the club to impose strict conditions for his return, including a donation to charity and mandatory anger management classes.
Reflecting on the past year, Clark expressed his desire to win back fans following the incident. “I’ve gotten a lot of grief since last year, rightfully so,” he admitted. “I’m hoping I can win back the fans… because it was a terrible incident.” He emphasized his competitive spirit and respect for the game, stating, “I definitely feel like I’m in a better place now.”
With the course conditions expected to toughen, Clark appears poised to maintain his lead. However, McIlroy, currently even par, remains a formidable presence. Fitzpatrick, who finished with a strong 70, expressed confidence going into the weekend, noting, “There are a couple of things I want to hopefully clean up... but overall, it’s been a really good two days.”
Meanwhile, Joaquin Niemann faced a challenging day after receiving a two-shot penalty for “serious misconduct” due to his behavior on the sixth hole. Despite this setback, he managed to fire a five-under round, showcasing his resilience in the face of adversity.
