Brewers’ Pitching Woes Lead to Heavy Defeat Against Astros
HOUSTON, Texas — The Milwaukee Brewers faced a challenging outing on Saturday as their pitching staff struggled significantly in a 9-2 loss to the Houston Astros at Daikin Park. Brandon Sproat, the young right-hander, was hit hard, allowing five runs over 4 1/3 innings, contributing to the team's downfall.
The Brewers initially took the lead in the second inning when Christian Yelich led off with a single, later scoring on a double by William Contreras after Brice Turang's groundout. However, the Astros quickly responded, with a one-out double from Yordan Alvarez signaling trouble for Sproat. Despite escaping that inning unscathed, the tide turned in the second as Cam Smith scored after a controversial safe call at home plate, which was upheld despite a challenge by manager Pat Murphy.
As the game progressed, the Astros built their lead, thanks in part to Jeremy Peña’s two-run homer in the second and a series of unfortunate plays by the Brewers. Sproat started the fifth inning facing increasing pressure, and after allowing a single and hitting a batter, he was replaced by Carlos Rodriguez. Rodriguez's first batter, Taylor Trammell, reached base, allowing Peña to score and further extend the Astros' lead to 4-2.
In the eighth inning, the Astros pulled away decisively with a three-run home run from Christian Walker off Jake Woodford, cementing the score at 9-2. Despite the offensive opportunities for the Brewers, their lineup struggled, with only six hits and the bottom three batters in the lineup combining for an unsuccessful 0-for-10 performance.
Looking ahead, the Brewers still have a shot at winning the series with Jacob Misiorowski slated to pitch in the final game against Tatsuya Imai of the Astros. While Sproat showed flashes of potential, Murphy emphasized the need for consistency, stating, “We’re not going to tolerate too many duds like this.” The Brewers will hope to bounce back and find their rhythm offensively and on the mound in the next matchup.
