Broncos Boost Surtain II's Salary to Align with Elite Cornerbacks

The Denver Broncos have awarded cornerback Pat Surtain II a modest salary increase of $5 million for the 2026 season, as reported by Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. Surtain's agent, Tory Dandy, confirmed that the player has reached an agreement with the team to adjust his contract accordingly.

In addition to the enhanced salary for 2026, Surtain stands to gain another $5 million in 2027 if he earns All-Pro or Pro Bowler honors by season's end. Given Surtain's impressive track record, including two first-team All-Pro selections and four Pro Bowl appearances in just five years, these accolades seem well within reach.

Surtain originally signed a four-year, $96 million contract extension in 2020, which at that time made him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. However, as the market has evolved, he has fallen behind some of his peers in terms of salary. This latest adjustment aims to keep Surtain satisfied and competitive with other top-tier corners, potentially paving the way for future contract discussions.

Recognized as a key player, Surtain was named the Defensive Player of the Year in 2024 and showcased his abilities last season. Known for his ability to effectively shut down opposing receivers, he is an essential component of the Broncos' secondary. His absence due to a shoulder injury last year highlighted his importance, as the defense struggled without him on the field.

As the Broncos approach offseason training activities and camp, questions linger about the rest of the secondary. Riley Moss is expected to start across from Surtain, while Ja’Quan McMillian emerged as a playmaker last season. Jahdae Barron, Denver's top draft pick, faced challenges in his rookie year. The secondary also includes safety Talanoa Hufanga, who joined as a free agent, and Brandon Jones, with several players competing for depth roles and special teams positions. Overall, the Broncos have focused on retaining key players, and this adjustment for Surtain is part of that strategy.
