Lakers Eye Alex Karaban as Potential Draft Pick
The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a pivotal offseason, armed with significant salary cap flexibility and two future first-round picks that could aid their quest to construct a championship-caliber roster centered around Luka Doncic. As part of their preparations, the team is analyzing prospects for the upcoming draft, including Alex Karaban, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward from the University of Connecticut.
While Karaban may not be the most explosive athlete—his vertical leap is noted at just 33 inches and his wingspan at 6-foot-11—he has garnered attention for his shooting prowess. Over his four seasons with the Huskies, during which he redshirted his freshman year, he maintained a 37.4% shooting rate from beyond the arc and an overall field goal percentage of 46.8% while averaging 12.5 points and five rebounds per game.
Karaban played a key role in leading UConn to consecutive NCAA championships in 2024 and 2025 as a starter. Though he declared for the draft two years prior, he opted to return for two additional seasons to further develop his skills. Known for his sharp shooting, both from a standstill and while on the move, he nonetheless averaged a block per game throughout his college career, peaking at 1.5 blocks per game during his final season.
Many analysts predict that Karaban could be selected in the late second round. Although the Lakers lack a second-round pick this year, their history suggests they might acquire such a pick through trade or purchase. If Karaban lands with the Lakers, he could provide valuable depth off the bench.
