In the north, their oldest rivals celebrated a historic Premier League title, while in the west, Chelsea did what they almost always do when Tottenham Hotspur visit Stamford Bridge. Anguish all over London for Spurs again this night – the securing of their Premier League status now down to the last day of the season on Sunday.

Defeat again, the 17th of the season from hell, while 16 places above Arsenal claimed their seventh league title since Spurs won their last in 1961. The unbearable weight of all that history will have to be set aside for now because there is still a strong possibility that Spurs will be playing in the Football League next season. Their Premier League lives rest on them taking a point against Everton on Sunday – at their home stadium where they have won just twice all season.

Afterwards, their new manager Roberto De Zerbi made clear what was at stake – much more than when Spurs competed for their first trophy in 17 years in the Europa League final last season. “Now we play for something more important,” he said, directly referencing the final in Bilbao. “The history of the club and the dignity is more important than the trophy.” Spurs have a great deal more than just their dignity to lose with relegation, as any glance at their operating costs will indicate – but the point was well made.

They were beaten by Chelsea, a side that had not won any of their previous seven Premier League games – and now can no longer qualify for the Champions League. But the crisis for Spurs is on a different scale. The players, including the substitute James Maddison, left the pitch asking referee Stuart Attwell for more time. It is time that is running out. This result opened up for West Ham United a narrow shaft of light that, in spite of their own recent form, they may yet emerge from their own relegation death spiral.

The terms are quite simple – Spurs lead West Ham by two points, effectively three given goal difference, but can be overhauled if West Ham beat Leeds on Sunday and Spurs lose to Everton. James Maddison was sent on again as a late Spurs substitute and might even have scored a season-changing equaliser were it not for the late block from Jorell Hato. De Zerbi had Maddison and his two fellow substitutes finally ready to come on when Andrey Santos had scored Chelsea’s second goal and suddenly the away team had two giant steps to make.

They almost got there. Richarlison, who had struggled to guide anything on target finally scored and Chelsea, who had been given a first half lead by Enzo Fernandez, were on the back foot at last. But Spurs do not have the confidence. They saw Marc Cucurella booked for pulling down Micky Van de Ven in the Chelsea penalty box at a corner although no penalty was awarded because the foul had come while the ball was still dead.

There are many recriminations but ultimately Spurs have built this catastrophe themselves. Through three managers, the September ejection of chairman Daniel Levy and now this last day shoot-out there is no way of telling how the pieces will land. De Zerbi was asked later if he could rely on Maddison for this final day and he admitted that the Englishman, back from an injury that has wiped out his season, can play no more than 25 minutes maximum.

Spurs had started well but what was notable was how swiftly that early striving slipped away. The Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane was without his own recent injury returnee Levi Colwill who had played the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday. So too Reece James, also on the bench, and Joao Pedro, the Brazilian who has, McFarlane says, a small injury. The point for Bournemouth against Manchester City means that Chelsea cannot qualify for the Champions League this season, although they go into the final game of the season at Sunderland with a place in the Uefa competitions on the line.

Meanwhile, McFarlane joins a long line of Chelsea managers of much higher profile who have not lost at home to Spurs in the league. That last league win for Spurs at Stamford Bridge remains February 1990 when Gary Lineker was the matchwinner.

The Fernandez goal was avoidable. The Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, preferred to Guglielmo Vicario, still recovering from injury, had looked confident up to that point but there was something wrong about his attempt to save Fernandez’s right foot shot. The No 8 appeared a little too far out and his shot, when it left his foot, did not seem powerful enough to compensate for that distance. It was not even aimed into the corner but Kinsky did not react quickly enough.

Mathys Tel had hit the post early on but gradually old frustrations set in for Spurs. De Zerbi played Conor Gallagher as a No 10 behind Richarlison. Back at the club at which he grew up, Gallagher was not afforded a warm welcome and one had to wonder if it played on his mind.

In the second half, a badly misjudged ball from Randal Kolo Muani gave Cole Palmer a run at goal. He picked his pass to Pedro Neto on the right and his cross to the back post was tapped by Fernandez into the path of Santos to score. Finally, De Zerbi sent on Maddison, Djed Spence and Pape Matar Sarr. They could conjure one goal – backheeled by Sarr into a range from which even Richarlison, with his shaky confidence, could not miss. But they could not summon another.

De Zerbi: Dignity of club on line in relegation decider

Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi said that his squad will play for the “dignity of the club” in a relegation decider on Sunday against Everton that he said was more important than last season’s Europa League final.

Another defeat to Chelsea means that Spurs need a draw at least to avoid the drop on Sunday. If they lose to Everton at home and West Ham United beat Leeds United then Spurs will be relegated from English football’s top-flight for the first time since they went down in 1977 into the old Second Division.

De Zerbi said that his players understood “very well” the gravity of the situation. “Because Sunday is the final for Tottenham, not Bilbao against Man United [last season’s Europa League win],” he said. “The most important game is Sunday, because last season they [Spurs] played for the trophy, now we play for something more important than the trophy.

“[Why?] Because the pride, the history of the club, the dignity are more important than the trophy. The trophy you can win, you can lose, nothing changes in your life. You can have one trophy more, but the most important is to keep the dignity, to keep the pride, not to go on holiday like this [head up], and not like this [head down].”

Roberto de Zerbi

Asked whether he was confident his players understood that, De Zerbi said that he was sure. “Because I’m living just for Tottenham. I have lived the last 45 days just for one thing. Tottenham and for my players and I know them very well. Then we can make differences.

“Because not everyone is like their team-mate because the character, the level of passion, the level of personality is different … the people are different. But every one of them they are focused on the target. They are working hard during the week and every one of us wants to achieve the goal.”

Of Sunday he said: “I think we played a final [last season], we played an important game but in our stadium and we have two results out of three [a win or a draw benefits Spurs]. So we have to stay alive. But anyway, it is a big day for us.”

Spurs’ worrying home form

Tottenham have the second-worst home form in the Premier League this season, collecting just 12 points and two victories from 18 matches. They haven’t won at home since December. Due to their superior goal difference, a draw would also be enough for Tottenham to secure safety, but tonight’s result and this form will give West Ham some added encouragement as they prepare to take on Leeds on the final day of the season.

During their game against Chelsea, Tottenham’s bitter rivals Arsenal were crowned as Premier League champions, after Manchester City drew 1-1 with Bournemouth. It’s been a truly nightmarish evening for Spurs.

Chelsea rub salt in Spurs’ wounds

10:10pm

FT: Chelsea 2 Tottenham 1

Tottenham’s wretched run of form at Stamford Bridge continues as Chelsea claim a 2-1 victory over Spurs. Goals from Fernandez and Andrey Santos powered the hosts into a 2-0 lead, before Richarlison’s strike set up a nervy end to the game. The visitors couldn’t find an equaliser and this result lifts Chelsea up to eighth, just a point behind Brighton in seventh. Meanwhile, Spurs stay 17th, two points ahead of 18th-place West Ham. As long as Spurs avoid defeat on the last day at home to Everton then they will stay up. West Ham have to beat Leeds if they stand any chance of retaining their top-flight status.

10:08pm

90+7 min: Chelsea 2 Tottenham 1

Chelsea are still holding firm and Spurs can’t get the ball forward. There’s less than a minute left now.

Tel then fires a low cross into the box, but he can’t find a Tottenham shirt and that could be that.

10:06pm

90+4 min: Chelsea 2 Tottenham 1

Not to worry West Ham fans, Maddison gets too much power on the set piece and whips it over the bar.

10:05pm

90+3 min: Chelsea 2 Tottenham 1

Essugo is carded for halting a Tottenham attack. It’s getting desperate for Spurs now. Caicedo catches Gallagher on the edge of Chelsea’s penalty area and the visitors have a free-kick in a great position. Maddison is stood over it.

10:03pm

90 min: Chelsea 2 Tottenham 1

There will be seven minutes of added time. Can Spurs find a late goal and end the relegation debate?

Estevao, on the bench, had a go at the fourth official after he confirmed there would be a minimum of seven minutes of added time. I must add it was done with a smile on his face.

10:01pm

89 min: Chelsea 2 Tottenham 1

Chelsea make a triple change as they look to protect their slender lead. Mheuka, Essugo and Garnacho replace Delap, Palmer and Neto.

09:59pm

87 min: Chelsea 2 Tottenham 1

There’s some commotion inside the penalty area as Spurs prepare to take a corner, with Cucurella hauling Van de Ven to the floor. Both sets of players surround the referee. It’s very hard to work out what’s going on in such a crowded six-yard box. Cucurella is booked but the offence occurred before the whistle was blown for the corner, so Spurs are denied a penalty.

Chelsea eventually clear the second corner, and Delap collides with Spence as the home side attempt to get forward. The striker is booked for his troubles.

Such a lack of skill from Liam Delap. An experienced forward uses his body, not his elbow. Missed a chance to punish Spurs who had committed men forward in search of an equaliser.

09:57pm

84 min: Chelsea 2 Tottenham 1

Richarlison and Maddison combine, allowing the English playmaker to advance into Chelsea’s penalty area. From close range he shoots, but Hato comes across to make a goal-saving tackle to block Maddison’s effort.

That Jorrel Hato last-ditch tackle on Maddison was good, it drew applause from both sets of benches.

09:54pm

81 min: Chelsea 2 Tottenham 1

Chelsea make another defensive alteration as Sarr replaces Fofana. Palmer then fires a free-kick into the Tottenham wall.

09:52pm

79 min: Chelsea 2 Tottenham 1

Hato gets into deep conversation with the referee and needlessly picks up a yellow card, with Chelsea beginning to look a little apprehensive.

Having spoken about the brilliant atmosphere in the first half, that Richarlison goal has brought a level of nervousness that wasn’t present before. The home fans have just booed Neto, who tried to pass back instead of moving into a goalscoring position with the ball.

09:49pm

77 min: Chelsea 2 Tottenham 1

Following that Spurs goal, Acheampong was taken off for Chalobah. Can Spurs kick on and salvage something from this game?

09:45pm

GOAL! Richarlison pulls one back for Spurs

Chelsea are caught in short numbers at the back and Tel threads a pass through to Porro, who tees up Sarr. The substitute tries a back heel and gets the execution completely wrong, but the ball trickles into Richarlison’s path and the striker slams it into the net.

09:42pm

70 min: Chelsea 2 Tottenham 0

Confirmation of triple substitution for Spurs. Maddison, Sarr and Spence replace Kolo Muani, Palhinha and Udogie.

De Zerbi was about to give his final instructions and ring the changes before the second goal went in from Andrey Santos. He just turned away and sank into his seat. Tottenham have faded badly in this second half.

09:39pm

GOAL! Andrey Santos doubles Chelsea’s lead

Chelsea have barely ventured forward in this second half, but in the blink of an eye, they’re 2-0 ahead. Neto clips a deep cross into the box. Fernandez then classily directs a first-time pass through Van de Ven’s legs towards Andrey Santos, who applies a simple close-range finish by sliding the ball into the bottom corner. That is the Brazilian’s first Premier League goal and it puts Chelsea in control. Agony for Tottenham, who were preparing a triple change. They have to go for it now.

09:38pm

66 min: Chelsea 1 Tottenham 0

Chelsea are sinking deeper and are inviting pressure from Spurs. However, the visitors aren’t taking full advantage. They’re lacking purpose in their attacking play. It’s not exactly been inspiring football from a Chelsea perspective either.

The game has gone into a stop-start mode and, in his bid to keep all the players focused, Enzo Fernandez is waving his hands to demand more, more, more. He also made eye contact with MacFarlane to urge him on: more, more, more.

09:35pm

Udogie is the third Spurs defender to receive a booking for bumping into Fofana. It’s a pretty needless yellow card.

09:31pm

59 min: Chelsea 1 Tottenham 0

Porro floats a corner into the box and Richarlison beats Andrey Santos to the ball. However, it’s a routine save for Sanchez, who comfortably collects. It’s Spurs’ first attempt on target at Stamford Bridge this evening.

09:29pm

56 min: Chelsea 1 Tottenham 0

De Zerbi will soon have to think about some changes. Spurs aren’t causing Chelsea enough problems. How long before Maddison could be introduced? The away side need an attacking spark from somewhere.

09:26pm

53 min: Chelsea 1 Tottenham 0

Acheampong does brilliantly to beat Udogie to a ball in behind. The Spurs defender clips the heels of the Chelsea youngster, gifting the hosts a free-kick. Spurs are still waiting for a first shot on target.

09:23pm

51 min: Chelsea 1 Tottenham 0

Tel beats Cucurella with ease and whips a menacing cross into the box to find Richarlison. The unmarked striker heads wide from a presentable position. He will be very relieved to see the offside flag go up.

After that horrible miss from Richarlison, Roberto De Zerbi turned away in frustration, bent his head down to take water from the ice box and yelled out his frustration into it.

09:21pm

49 min: Chelsea 1 Tottenham 0

Spurs pressure forces a mistake from Andrey Santos, who passes the ball out for a throw-in. It looks like Danso is ready for a long throw, but he goes short to Udogie. The full-back overhits a cross into the box and Chelsea now have a throw-in. That is so poor from Udogie.

09:17pm

We are back under way for the second half. Both sides are unchanged at the break.

Fernandez feels the love

09:02pm

HT: Chelsea 1 Tottenham 0

As it stands, the Premier League relegation battle will go to the final day of the season, with Chelsea leading Tottenham 1-0 at Stamford Bridge thanks to Fernandez’s opener. The visitors started well and hit the post through Tel’s header. However, Chelsea grew into the contest and broke the deadlock through Fernandez’s long-range effort. The Chelsea captain then struck the bar with a whipped free kick. Spurs have struggled to create chances and there is work to do for De Zerbi’s men. Meanwhile, a win for Chelsea would lift them up to eighth and back in contention for Europa League qualification.

09:02pm

45+1 min: Chelsea 1 Tottenham 0

Palhinha loses the ball cheaply in midfield and Bentancur’s tackle is far too weak. This allows the ball to break to Palmer, who drags a low effort wide from outside the area.

09:00pm

44 min: Chelsea 1 Tottenham 0

Neto launches the free kick into the box, and under serious pressure, Kinsky does very well to catch it without falling into his goal.

Antonin Kinsky has been a one-man army for Spurs since he came into the team under De Zerbi. He’s just drawn applause from Bruno Saltor and James Maddison after impressively catching a cross under huge pressure from the Chelsea forwards.

08:59pm

43 min: Chelsea 1 Tottenham 0

Delap receives a ball down the channel and does excellently to turn Van de Ven. The Spurs captain pulls him back and is booked. After Porro, it’s another Spurs defender on a yellow card.

08:56pm

Fernandez and Palmer are causing Tottenham a host of problems. They’re picking up positions in such awkward attacking pockets in between the Spurs midfield and defence.

08:53pm

Tel has been quiet for a while, but suddenly bursts into life and receives the ball inside the penalty area. The winger cuts inside of Fofana and shoots, but his effort is high and wide.

Chelsea burst forward and the move ends with Cucurella firing a cross into Delap. The striker swivels and shoots, but his effort is comfortably off target.

Liam Delap is looking for only his second league goal of the season and has been given a rare opportunity to start in place of Joao Pedro. It was refreshing to see both Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo applaud his wayward shot from the bench. That will give him confidence.

08:33pm

GOAL! Fernandez nets a beauty to open the scoring for Chelsea

Palmer dribbles down the right hand side and feeds Neto. The winger darts inside and passes to Fernandez. From an incredibly long distance, the Chelsea captain bends a powerful strike into the net. It looks like Kinsky could have done better. It’s not the goalkeeper’s finest moment. The goal is slightly against the run of play, but Chelsea won’t care. Is it a brilliant strike or a goalkeeping error?

Feels on a few replays that Kinsky should have done better. Fernandez was a long way out and it was not an unsaveable clout of the ball.

08:31pm

16 min: Chelsea 0 Tottenham 0

De Zerbi is incredibly agitated and clearly wants to secure Premier League survival here. You can hear him dishing out instructions to his players even from the press box.

08:30pm

14 min: Chelsea 0 Tottenham 0

Chelsea come forward and Hato finds himself incredibly high up the pitch. The defender tees up Palmer, who bends a curling effort from the edge of the penalty area that forces Kinsky into a diving save. Palmer has undoubtedly been Chelsea’s brightest spark in these opening stages.

08:27pm

11 min: Chelsea 0 Tottenham 0

Off the post for Spurs! Porro clips a teasing cross towards the back post. It finds Tel, who sneaks in between two Chelsea defenders, but his diving header agonisingly hits the post. It’s another encouraging sign for the visitors.

Porro and Kolo Muani play a slick one-two to easily bypass Cucurella. The Frenchman drives forward, but his cross is headed away by Fofana. Spurs have made a positive start.

Chelsea with nearly all of the early possession. Fernandez has almost drifted out to the left, with Palmer taking up the central position behind Delap. Fernandez is playing very narrow. It will be interesting to see if the Chelsea captain and Palmer interchange positions as the game goes on.

Updates on Joao Pedro and Levi Colwill

Joao Pedro receiving an award pitch side at Chelsea currently. He’s raised a smile. One suspects he’s got his fingers crossed that someone isn’t going to make it to the US from the Brazil squad and that he is fit enough to step up. He is not in the squad tonight.

Levi Colwill is also here in a hoodie but not in the team. The reason I’ve been told is load management, and that he’s not ready to play 90 minutes in three games in a week. He played 90 against City at Wembley the other day and will likely be in the team at the weekend against Sunderland.

Matt Law: Xabi Alonso’s job title is a message to the Chelsea players

It has been far too easy for players to find excuses at Chelsea. The coach is not good enough, he’s too inexperienced, he hasn’t won anything, he’s too nice. The appointment of Xabi Alonso has stripped all of those away.

The Chelsea owners have stopped experimenting and have killed the culture of excuses that has strangled the club during the BlueCo era by turning to a man of Alonso’s pedigree and giving him the title of manager.

Each of Alonso’s predecessors during the BlueCo ownership was called “head coach”. Making the Spaniard their first manager is recognition of his seniority within the set-up and a clear message to the players that he is in charge.

Assessing the team news

Chelsea

Calum McFarlane has named four changes to the team which lost against Man City. The big news is that Joao Pedro is absent, after being taken off in the latter stages of the FA Cup final, and he’s replaced by Liam Delap. Josh Acheampong comes in for a rare start in defence, while Andrey Santos and Pedro Neto are the other alterations. Levi Colwill and Malo Gusto are missing from the squad. Reece James is on the bench.

Tottenham

The team news is much simpler for the visitors, who name an unchanged side following their draw with Leeds. Conor Gallagher starts against his former club and Antonin Kinsky keeps his place in goal. James Maddison remains on the bench. Long-term absentees include Xavi Simons, Dejan Kulusevski, Cristian Romero, Mohammed Kudus, Wilson Odobert and Ben Davies.

Battle of the Bridge

Back in 2016, Chelsea were tenth once again following a disastrous campaign which had overseen the dismissal of Jose Mourinho, while Spurs needed a victory to keep pace with Leicester City at the top of the Premier League table.

The visitors flew into a two-goal lead but were pegged back by Chelsea, with Eden Hazard’s stunning late equaliser enough to secure the title for Leicester.

But this game, a decade ago, is remembered for its fiery nature, the persistent clashes between both sets of players and a massive brawl after the full-time whistle.

06:47pm

A bitter rivalry is renewed

Good evening and welcome to our live blog for this mouthwatering Premier League match between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.

There’s never a dull moment at Chelsea, and following last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup final, Xabi Alonso agreed to become the club’s new manager on a four-year deal. On May 17, Chelsea confirmed the news that Alonso will begin his role at Stamford Bridge on July 1.

Liam Rosenior’s sacking prompted BlueCo to begin “a process of self-reflection”, and they’ve recruited a manager with impeccable pedigree who won nearly everything to offer in the game as a supremely technical midfielder. As a coach, Alonso won the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen in 2024, before leaving Real Madrid by mutual consent in January. The 44-year-old’s appointment will provide some much-needed relief for Chelsea fans and ease the woes of the club’s turbulent season.

Ahead of kick-off, Chelsea are languishing in 10th, four points behind seventh-place Brighton, who occupy the lowest Europa League spot. Despite Chelsea’s dismal Premier League form, which has yielded six losses in their previous seven matches, Calum McFarlane’s side still have a slim chance of squeezing into Europe, but they must beat their bitter rivals tonight.

West Ham United’s pathetic 3-1 defeat against Newcastle United on Sunday evening has left Spurs on the brink of Premier League safety. After losing his first outing in charge of the club to Sunderland, head coach Roberto De Zerbi has since guided Spurs to a four-match unbeaten run, lifting them to 17th, two points ahead of West Ham, having played a game fewer. In their previous fixture, Spurs drew 1-1 with Leeds United after Mathys Tel’s stunning opener was cancelled out by Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s penalty.

Due to Spurs’ vastly superior goal difference (-9 compared to West Ham’s total of -22), they will all but secure safety if they avoid defeat against Chelsea. However, Spurs have a dreadful record at Stamford Bridge, having won just once there since 1990.

Chelsea could plunge Spurs back into the drop zone, while the visitors could dispel any chance of a shock relegation with a positive result. Whatever happens, when these two meet, there is always drama and controversy.

Kick-off is at 20:15, with team news arriving shortly.
