OKC’s depth suddenly on the brink after Jalen Williams’ hamstring issue — Game 3’s shocking twist
Oklahoma City has the squad depth to manage a Jalen Williams injury, but that does not mean the Thunder can replace what he brings.
Williams was ruled out of the second half of Game 2 with left hamstring tightness, the same leg that already cost him six playoff games earlier in the spring. He played just seven minutes, finishing with four points and two steals before Oklahoma City had to finish the night without him.
Even without him on the floor, Oklahoma City beat San Antonio 122-113 to even up the Western Conference finals at one game apiece.
But as Game 3 shifts to San Antonio, so does attention on Williams’ status. He is currently considered day-to-day and is questionable for Saturday’s contest.
Williams’ absence changes the way OKC plays, not just who fills in
Williams offers a lot more than just scoring. He’s a second creator alongside Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and his size and strength give Oklahoma City flexibility on both ends of the floor.
If he’s limited in Game 3, the Thunder can still adapt. They just have to go about it in a different way.
Heading into the series, NBA.com pointed out Oklahoma City’s unique depth, and Game 2 provided a clear example of why that’s important.
The Thunder bench outscored San Antonio’s reserves 57-25. Alex Caruso gave Oklahoma City 17 points, Cason Wallace stepped into the second-half lineup after Williams exited, and the Thunder still had enough guard depth to keep pressure on the Spurs.
Ajay Mitchell brings pace. Wallace brings defense and steadiness. Caruso brings disruption and playoff calm. None of them fully replicates Williams’ mix of size, shot creation and connective play.
Thunder need to keep their offence varied
Game 3 is already being talked about in terms of fatigue and injury concerns, and that’s where Williams’ availability becomes crucial.
Oklahoma City can lean more heavily on Gilgeous-Alexander if needed. He responded in Game 2 with 30 points and nine assists after the Spurs won the opener.
But that’s a less balanced version of the Thunder than the one that has been effective throughout most of this postseason.
San Antonio Will Immediately Look for Areas to Exploit
If Williams is unavailable or not at full strength, the Spurs are likely to shift more defensive focus onto Gilgeous-Alexander and challenge the rest of the Thunder to step up.
Oklahoma City’s depth has been a strength throughout the season, but Game 3 could test whether that remains true without Williams filling his usual role.
The Thunder have shown they can adapt, but there isn’t another player on their roster who covers quite as much ground as Williams does.
