The Baltimore Orioles' recent momentum came to a halt as they faced a tough loss against the Boston Red Sox, falling 8-1 at Fenway Park. Starting pitcher Chris Bassitt endured a challenging outing, lasting only three innings before leaving due to a potential injury. The Red Sox capitalized on this, scoring five runs in a decisive fifth inning.
In the first inning, Bassitt surrendered a run to Wilyer Abreu's single, but a strong throw from Taylor Ward prevented further damage. After a clean second inning, Bassitt struggled in the third, allowing a two-run homer to Abreu, followed by a bases-loaded situation that he managed to escape with a groundout.
Albert Suárez took over in the fourth, but his performance faltered. After allowing a leadoff double to Wilson Contreras, the inning spiraled as a misplayed fly ball in center field by Blaze Alexander allowed two runs to score. Additional runs followed from a double by Caleb Durbin and a single from Ceddanne Rafaela, extending the Red Sox's lead.
Despite some early opportunities, including a double steal attempt in the first that resulted in an out, the Orioles only managed to score a single run late in the game from Adley Rutschman's triple in the seventh. Anthony Nunez and Grant Wolfram pitched effectively in relief, but the damage had already been done.
With this defeat, the Orioles' record now stands at 29-33. The team hopes to rebound in the series finale tomorrow afternoon with Trevor Rogers scheduled to pitch, while the Red Sox have yet to announce their starter.
