Popovic Optimistic About Australia's World Cup Prospects Following Swiss Stalemate
Australia's national football coach, Tony Popovic, expressed confidence in his team's ability to exceed expectations after their 1-1 draw with Switzerland in San Diego. The match served as the final warm-up for both squads ahead of the upcoming World Cup, which kicks off on Thursday.
In the first half, Dan Ndoye put Switzerland ahead with a goal in the 14th minute. However, Australia responded in the second half, with debutant Tete Yengi finding the equalizer. Popovic opted for a largely experimental lineup, making seven changes from the team that lost 1-0 to Mexico last week, before switching to a more familiar formation after halftime.
"I'm just happy. We've got no injuries. We've got through the game," Popovic commented. He added, "We got a result, that always helps and we scored a very nice goal. We need to start better, of course, next week, that will help us."
This marks Australia’s sixth consecutive appearance in the World Cup, where they will compete in Group D alongside Turkey, co-hosts the United States, and Paraguay. Meanwhile, Switzerland will face Qatar, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and co-hosts Canada in Group B.
