Tartan Army Takes Over Fenway Park in Celebration of Scotland's World Cup Win

BOSTON (AP) — Following a triumphant return to the World Cup after 28 years, Scotland's Tartan Army descended upon Fenway Park on Sunday night, joining forces with Red Sox Nation in a spirited celebration. A vibrant procession of Scottish fans made their way from a nearby park, roughly half a mile from the iconic baseball venue, making a grand entrance as they paraded down the street behind the center-field bleachers before filling the bars adjacent to the legendary Green Monster.

On Saturday, Scotland secured a memorable 1-0 victory over Haiti at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, thanks to John McGinn's deflected shot, marking the team's first win at the World Cup since 1990. On Sunday, the Scots gathered to witness the Red Sox face off against the Texas Rangers, an event the team celebrated as “Scottish Heritage Celebration Night,” which featured jerseys in Scottish colors available for fans.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how Fenway Park deals with us,” remarked 43-year-old Allan Middlemass from Edinburgh, proudly sporting a blue Red Sox cap he purchased for the occasion. The atmosphere outside the ballpark was electric, with bagpipes reverberating through the air, large Scottish flags waving, and fans donning blue and orange jerseys.

As they made their 30-minute march, chants of “no Scotland, no party” echoed through the streets, punctuated by singing while the Red Sox and Rangers warmed up. Some fans engaged in a playful kickabout with a soccer ball outside the bleachers entrance, all while escorted by Boston police.

“I’m just here for the sing-song,” said 38-year-old Darren McGregor from Gourock, who left a nearby bar with friends, all sporting fresh Red Sox hats. The celebration continued as fans filled the park, harmonizing with the Fenway sound system's rendition of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” about 20 minutes before the game began.

Earlier in the day, many enjoyed the World Cup match between Japan and the Netherlands, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Robert Cooper and his son, Aaron, traveled from Glasgow and expressed their excitement about attending their first game at Fenway. “I think he wants to try and catch one,” Cooper said, referring to his son's hopes of snagging a homer or foul ball.

Scotland's recent World Cup journey has brought renewed pride, with Middlemass expressing his feelings about the historic win: “There’s no words for that.” With the team set to play against Morocco on Friday, the Tartan Army is gearing up to continue the celebration in Boston.
