Tensions Rise Between Tennessee Coach and Texas Tech Player Over Postgame Handshake Incident

The Women’s College World Series clash on Saturday, May 30, between Tennessee and Texas Tech was a tightly contested affair, ultimately concluding with a 2-1 victory for the Lady Vols thanks to Emma Clarke's walk-off homer in the ninth inning. However, the game has been somewhat overshadowed by a controversy surrounding a handshake incident involving Tennessee's head coach, Karen Weekly, and Texas Tech third baseman Taylor Pannell.

In a conversation with Cora Hall from the Knoxville News Sentinel, Weekly vehemently refuted Pannell's claims that she did not extend a cordial "good game" after the match, instead asserting that she told the player she had made a mistake. Weekly characterized Pannell's version of events as “an outright lie,” maintaining her stance that she greeted the former Lady Vols player just like every other competitor. “If you rewatch the tape of the handshake line, you’re going to see me go just as fast by her as anybody else,” Weekly explained. “I didn’t even know where she was in the handshake line.”

During a postgame press conference, Weekly reiterated her message to Pannell, stating, “Good game, like I say to every player.” Meanwhile, Pannell, who transferred to Texas Tech after her time at Tennessee, presented a contrasting account during her own postgame remarks. “We were walking through the line, just saying ‘good game,’ and she said that I made a mistake instead of good game, which, it’s kind of crazy,” Pannell commented, adding that she found it amusing Weekly was still focused on the incident.

Pannell had a mixed performance in the game, finishing 1-for-4 at bat and eventually scoring Texas Tech's tying run during a pivotal seventh inning play that was overturned after a successful challenge by coach Gerry Glasco.

Tennessee's victory propels them to the semifinals of the WCWS for the second consecutive year, where they will face either No. 2 Texas or the loser of the No. 1 Alabama versus No. 4 Nebraska match. Texas Tech, now looking to bounce back, will play No. 8 UCLA in a double-elimination matchup on Sunday, May 31, as they aim to make history as the lowest-seeded team to win the tournament.
