Yankees' Spencer Jones Hits First MLB Home Run in Victory Over Guardians

CLEVELAND — Spencer Jones showcased his power on Tuesday by hitting his inaugural major league home run during the Yankees' 3-2 triumph against the Guardians. In the second inning, Jones put the Yankees ahead with a two-run homer off Cleveland pitcher Slade Cecconi, sending the ball soaring 443 feet into the trees and shrubs beyond the outfield at Progressive Field.

The impressive shot was a clear home run, allowing Jones and the Yankees to easily retrieve the ball without having to negotiate with fans. The 25-year-old slugged an 87.2-mph cutter right down the middle, connecting with a force of 112.2 mph.

Jones, who was called up last week when Aaron Judge was placed on the injured list, had faced challenges during his earlier stint in the majors, grappling with strikeouts and contact issues that dampened the outlook on his potential. However, his recent performance suggests improvement; he went 3 for 3 in his return on June 5 and raised his batting average to .278 after a 2 for 4 showing on Tuesday, with an OPS now at .722.

In addition to Jones’ homer, Jazz Chisholm Jr. also made headlines by hitting a solo home run in the eighth inning, breaking a 2-2 tie. The Guardians had taken advantage of some shaky defense from Anthony Volpe, scoring two runs off Gerrit Cole in the third inning. Cole, in his fourth start after recovering from Tommy John surgery, pitched four innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out four. He has now thrown a season-high 83 pitches in consecutive outings.
