ESPN Chooses Not to Use Rules Analyst Steve Javie During Game 3 Broadcast

In the fast-paced environment of live sports broadcasting, producers often have to make quick decisions on how to best convey the game to viewers. One common element in recent broadcasts is the inclusion of a rules analyst, typically a former referee, who can explain contentious calls made during the game. This role has become increasingly important over the last decade or so.

During Game 3 of the NBA Finals featuring the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs, there were numerous controversial officiating decisions that left Knicks head coach Mike Brown visibly frustrated in the postgame press conference. Despite the heated moments, ESPN chose not to utilize rules analyst Steve Javie, who was available and stationed at the NBA Replay Center in Secaucus, New Jersey.

According to a report by Mike Mazzeo in Sports Business Journal, the decision to exclude Javie from the broadcast was made in real-time by the production team, who opted to rely on the insights of color commentators instead. A source indicated that the crew determined when to call upon Javie as the game unfolded, ultimately deciding to forgo his expertise in favor of their existing analysts.

Among the notable calls during the game was a shove from Spurs player Victor Wembanyama against Knicks guard Jalen Brunson, which went unpunished by the officials. ESPN's Richard Jefferson remarked that the non-call “should be a flagrant-1,” yet Javie was not brought in to provide his perspective. Additionally, during a review that resulted in a flagrant foul being assessed to Brunson for a “reckless closeout,” Javie was again sidelined.

Given the scrutiny surrounding the officiating in this matchup, many found it surprising that ESPN did not incorporate Javie at any point. However, Jefferson and his co-analyst Tim Legler managed to provide adequate explanations of the calls, potentially indicating that ESPN is reserving Javie for more complex situations in future broadcasts.
