Celebrations Turn Violent in Paris After PSG's Champions League Triumph
Violence erupted in France as fans celebrated Paris Saint-Germain's recent Champions League victory, resulting in hundreds of arrests on Saturday night. The jubilant atmosphere quickly soured when a faction of supporters attempted to breach a police station following PSG's nail-biting penalty shootout win against Arsenal in Budapest.
As the final whistle blew, thousands took to the streets of Paris to revel in their team's success, with around 20,000 fans gathering on the iconic Champs-Élysées. The scene turned chaotic as some fans set off flares and sounded car horns near the Arc de Triomphe, prompting police intervention. Reports indicated that smaller groups engaged in vandalism, damaging shops and igniting fires, leading to the arrest of 45 individuals by 10 PM.
Authorities reported that the situation escalated in the upscale 8th Arrondissement, where efforts to storm a police station were thwarted. By 11 PM, law enforcement had detained over 130 people, with a police spokesperson noting that six vehicles and two storefronts suffered damage during the unrest.
By Sunday morning, the French Interior Minister announced that the total number of arrests across the country reached 416, with 283 occurring specifically in the Paris region. Earlier, crowds briefly blocked a major ring road before police dispersed them. Officers also responded to disturbances near the PSG stadium, clearing barricades and containing around 1,000 fans.
This incident echoes previous celebrations in May 2022, when over 500 arrests were made following PSG's first title win, prompting heightened security measures with thousands of officers deployed across the capital.
